Science-Backed Ingredients for Sleep, Mood and Stress
Science-Backed Ingredients for Sleep, Mood and Stress

One in three Americans don’t get enough sleep and 75% reported feeling stressed in just the last month. Occasionally poor mood and stress affect sleep; the reverse is also true.

Fortunately, Maypro offers an array number of powerful, science-backed proprietary branded ingredients (PBIs) that support these health areas, including Sanwa GABA, Venetron®, ETAS®, and MicroActive® Melatonin.

According to the Sleep Foundation, scientists divide sleep into four stages of rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Each stage plays an important role in repairing and rebuilding the brain and body.

People often think that REM sleep is deeper sleep because we dream more in this stage of sleep, but, in fact, non-REM stage 3 sleep is the most restful for the body, when the body carries out its tissue, bone and muscle repair functions.

Introducing Upcycled Sanwa GABA

SanwaGABA

Sanwa GABA offers a 90% GABA concentration upcycled from barley fermentation to support deep, restorative sleep.* A 2018 study found Sanwa GABA significantly enhanced deep non-REM stage 3 sleep compared to placebo over two weeks, a washout phase, followed by a crossover.*

Objective measures of stress were reduced in the subjects when supplemented with Sanwa GABA; fatigue was also significantly reduced.*

SanwaGABA

In a comparison with three other brands of GABA, Sanwa GABA was the only brand that objectively provides a deep restful sleep. In an earlier study looking at mood status, sleep quality and fatigue in workers, the subjects who received Sanwa GABA reported significant improvements in feelings of vigor and energy.*

Venetron: Supporting a Positive Outlook

Venetron

Derived from a patented, purified, powdered extract of Apocynum venetum, Venetron® is a dietary ingredient that has great potential to improve mood.*

Its stress-combating, mood-supporting and sleep-enhancing benefits derive from its mechanism of action, which involves reducing secretion of chromogranin A, a stress marker, and increasing serotonin levels, in this way supporting a positive outlook. Venetron doesn’t impact the CYP3A pathway and is effective at a low dose of 50 mg per day.

Venetron has been shown in several placebo-controlled human clinical trials to:

  • Support a positive outlook*
  • Alleviate occasional stress*
  • Improve sleep quality*
  • Ease symptoms of post-menstrual stress

ETAS: Tackling Stress and Supporting Sleep Quality

ETAS

Chronic and acute stress negatively impacts cognition, including memory and reasoning. Fortunately, research has shown that ETAS® can support healthy stress relief, thereby facilitating a more restful sleep and promoting brain function.*

Derived from the tough lower portion of asparagus stalks that would otherwise go to waste, ETAS is an ingredient that is both upcycled and sustainable.

Double-blind, placebo-controlled research has shown this Ingredient Idol winner for Cognitive Health effectively:

  • Increases quality of sleep*
  • Alleviates occasional stress by improving heart rate variability*
  • Raises cognitive performance, reduces fatigue, and improves the stress response*

ETAS asparagus extract powder works by increasing the production of Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) — an intracellular protein produced naturally by the body when it encounters a stressor, such as extreme heat.

HSP helps proteins to ensure correct folding and it repairs damaged cells, tipping the balance from excitatory cytokines to inhibitory ones, serves as an antioxidant, and protects cells from stress-caused damage.

In a study, healthy males who took ETAS showed a significant reduction in cortisol level increase and 2.5 times less expression of the psychological stress marker, chromogranin A, leading to better sleep.*

MicroActive Melatonin: Not Your Father’s Melatonin

ETAS

Ordinary melatonin supplements leave the body after four hours, so while they may aid in falling asleep, they are not effective for those who have difficulty staying asleep or who awaken too early.

MicroActive® Melatonin was developed to address this issue through a micronized, sustained-release technology that ensures the melatonin is gradually released over seven hours. While ordinary melatonin supplements expose the body to an unusually high spike of melatonin upon consumption, MicroActive Melatonin's sustained-release technology allows a consistent dose over a long period of time to better support sleep.

MicroActive Melatonin

Head-to-head tests of MicroActive Melatonin, unformulated melatonin, and two leading sustained-release brands showed that the other brands either released too quickly or did not release fully. MicroActive Melatonin not only provided an initial burst of melatonin at one hour, it delivered complete release of the remaining melatonin over the next six hours.
